Everyone has a certain purpose in their lives. They have come into the world to achieve something that they were destined to do. Some comprehend what and how to go about their lives within a few years’ time, while others struggle to find their real calling.

‘Calling’ is a term that indicates the correct path in life that is tailor-made for one’s skills and provides that person utmost satisfaction and full confidence. It all depends on the person’s inner instincts. If the gut feeling is positive about the work, strongly resonates with it, and adds confidence to the personality, then it is definitely something that a person must do. And even if a single factor, as mentioned above, is missing, they should weigh out their options and re-think.

The world is full of people who have switched their career successfully and are doing something that satisfies their soul and are proud of it. One of them is Sayò Popoola, a British songwriter and sings in genres like Afrobeats, Reggae, and other genres. She was one who did not know her true calling until she submerged herself into life-sucking studies and later found out she was not meant to do this.

Sayò was born in London on May 20, 1994, of Nigerian descent. She was fond of music from a very young age. Her amazing vocals, the ability to sing high notes with such ease, and her seamless transitions from one tune to another were qualities that only a few naturally talented kids possessed. As a youngster, she did not despise studying, but she also wanted to spend her time practicing music, which she seldom got. Sayò’s family was highly-qualified; every other relative was either a doctor, an engineer or was engaged in any other esteemed profession. So, subsequently, she was expected to choose a noble profession or do something that was reputable. Building a career in the music industry was not deemed as a respectful thing to do. So, she decided to study medicine and pursue her career in the field.

Sayò enrolled herself in Newcastle University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences. Due to her high intellect and a good academic record, she easily got a seat there. It had only been a year studying at the university, and she found herself drifting from studies. Sayò has simultaneously indulged herself in music, as she spent her leisure hours listening and jamming to the queens of pop Beyonce and Rihanna and writing lyrics that spoke on behalf of her feelings. This hobby of hers kept her alive and motivated to get her through the years of university.

Stepping into the music industry with zero support and no prior experience would waste her time and bring no good. So, Sayò decided to use the power of social media to take a step closer to her dream. She began with a YouTube channel, where she regularly uploaded her covers. Music was her escape. It helped her cope with the overwhelming pressure of the studies and the fact that she had to complete it no matter what. During the university years, her consistent YouTube uploads, growing fanbase, and frequent songwriting brought her into the limelight. She enrolled herself in the SingerCise UK company to practice her vocals and sharpen her songwriting skills.

After completing her degree, she decided to switch her career and invest all her time in music and take it seriously. In 2018, her musical talent was recognized, and she featured on the track, Ride by Samosong. The positive response Sayò received on this track motivated her to keep writing more songs and keep moving forward until she achieved what she had dreamt of.

While practicing and spending more time learning about the different music genres, Sayò found herself indulging in cultural music. She began listening to Afrobeats, especially to Burna Boy, Teni the entertainer, Tiwa Savage, and Wizkid. These artists inspired her to create music in this genre, and so Sayò began putting together pieces for her debut song. In 2019, she released her first single Confused. She had put in a lot of effort to create this song. From the lyrics to the melody of the music beats, everything was chosen and done by her. This track represented her confused feelings about love. Soon after, Sayò released her second single, Waiting. This was another major hit and was appreciated and widely by the masses.

Today, Sayò Popoola has a large and loyal fanbase in the USA, London, Nigeria, Ghana, and worldwide. Currently, she is working on bringing a new style of Afro music. This would be a new trend mixed with different music genres. Sayò is also associated with Thy Kingdom Records, LLC and is working under their guidance. Her story inspires those who have still not found their calling and struggling to make career choices. One needs to believe in themselves and give their best at every stage of life.
